The History

The early 20th century

The Wilhelminian-style building on „Schiffbauerdamm“ was constructed in the 1880s. Since that time, the noble corner house has accommodated various restaurants. Up until 1919, the inn located in the building was a popular meeting point for the shipbuilders from the neighbouring shipyards.

Though during the following years the shipyards were replaced by residential and commercial buildings. The former dining rooms became the offices of the Geneva Associaton of Swiss Merchants and a branch bank.

In the year 1931 a new owner established a high-class restaurant with the aim of „the hedonistic satisfaction of the desire for food and drink“. Searching for a proper name he chose „Ganymed“, after the cupbearer of the Greek Gods.

After World War II the building was restored by the architect Hermann Henselmann, the creator of „Stalinallee“

During the division of Germany, Ganymed became a meeting point for Berlin’s „elite“. Well-known artists like Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weill, or Helene Weigel met here as well as the political establishment of the GDR, or members of the Allied Armed Forces.

After reunification

Following the Fall of the Wall 1989 the restaurant was closed and could only be reopened in 1996 after extensive restorations.
The once pompous stucco was destroyed in World War II. Today only a mosaic with a depiction of Borussia remains of the splendor of the original facade.

Today Ganymed is operated in a french brasserie-style. In France brasseries are known as popular venues for politicians, businessmen or guests with cultural background.

In the spring of 2005 the existing rooms and the terrace in front of the Berliner Ensemble theater were added to by a beautiful sunny terrace right at the banks of the Spree river.
